God & Apples

Posted by on in Kids

Recently, my daughter asked me how Jesus could be God and talk about God at the same time. Of course she was talking about two parts of the trinity, God the Father and God the Son, but she didn’t realize that. She’d touched on something that we can all struggle with in our walk of faith. Sure, I could have cracked open the Bible to point out all the times in Scripture where God refers to Himself with words like “us” and “our” as in, “Let us make man in OUR image”. But, Alyssa’s eight. She needed something tangible to help her “get” this concept of the three-in-one. We used a classic reference that maybe you could use with your son or daughter:

God and Apples

apple wholeGod is kind of like an apple. Think about it…an apple is one thing. One YUMMY thing. It’s red, yellow, or green; sweet or tangy; and ready to munch. It’s full of good-for-you stuff and can even help quench your thirst. We love apples! But there’s more than meets the eye!

If you slice up an apple, you’ll see three different parts – the peel or skin, the flesh or white stuff, and the core where the seeds live. The three parts together make a whole apple. And, whether you have a piece of the core or the flesh or the skin in your hand, you could truthfully say you’re holding a piece of apple. Put them together and you have the complete definition of what an apple is – the whole yummy fruit.

In the Bible, God appears in and is referred to at times in His different forms – the Father, the Son, or the Spirit of the Lord. But, as a whole, He is God, and He loves us! He also wants us to love Him.

Let’s Pray: God, thank you for helping us understand a little more about who You are. Please help us to love You even more as we learn. And, help us to love Your people! Amen

Keep my commands and live, And my law as the apple of your eye. {Proverbs 7:2}

Then God said, “Let us make man in our likeness. Let them rule over the fish in the waters and the birds of the air. Let them rule over the livestock and over the whole earth. Let them rule over all of the creatures that move along the ground.” {Genesis 1:26}

So you must go and make disciples of all nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.{Matthew 28:19}

Have a FABULOUS Friday and a restful weekend!
